Neonatology
SA PAEDIATRICS AND NEWBORNS (SAPAN)
Who is a Neonatologist?
A neonatologist is a specialist paediatrician who cares for newborn babies who need extra medical attention in the first weeks of life. This includes babies with a range of health concerns such as breathing difficulties, infections, feeding challenges, congenital conditions, or complications around the time of birth.
Neonatology is a subspecialty of paediatrics focused on the unique needs of newborn infants during this critical period of development.
In their day-to-day work, neonatologists look after babies with a wide range of conditions. This may include premature infants, babies with breathing difficulties, infections, feeding problems, or complications related to birth. These babies have often been admitted in special care nurseries and neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), where they can receive close monitoring and advanced medical treatment.
Neonatologists work closely with obstetricians, midwives, nurses, and other paediatric specialists to ensure each baby receives comprehensive care.
An important part of a neonatologist’s role is supporting families. They help parents understand their baby’s condition, discuss treatment options, and guide them through what can often be an unexpected and stressful time. Their goal is to provide expert care while helping babies grow, stabilise, transition safely home with their families and continue to look after the babies and their families in first few years of life in follow up clinics.
